Islam teaches three stations. The third is the highest.

Islam → Iman → Ihsan

Excellence born of God-consciousness: the station this whole framework sits on.

The Prophet also taught that Allah loves that when one of you does a work, he does it with itqan (mastery). Al-Bayhaqi, on excellence.

Put together: your work is not a break from worship. Done with ihsan, it is worship. The salary is not the only wage: purpose, barakah (blessing), and a standing with Allah are earned in ordinary working hours.

Four tiers. One ladder.

أَمَانَة

Amanah · Trust

The floor every profession owes. Honesty. Keeping trusts. Fair dealing. Confidentiality kept without prompting.

In the room: the trust no one checks. Paying suppliers on time. Honouring the contract signed. Keeping client confidences without prompting. Holding what was given to you.

إِتْقَان

Itqan · Mastery

Doing the job properly. Competence and quality. Skilling up. Zero negligence on shift.

In the room: skilful without being watched. The advice memo accurate before anyone checked. Staying current with the field. Zero negligence on shift.

إِحْسَان

Ihsan · Excellence

Beyond the minimum. Grace, generosity, anticipating needs. Beauty no one demanded but everyone notices.

In the room: beauty no one demanded. The patient served before they asked. The brief chased before it had to be. Generosity that goes further than the contract.

مُشَاهَدَة

Mushahadah · Witnessing

Work as worship. Niyyah (intention). Awareness of being seen by Allah: the spiritual insight that names the work.

In the room: aware that the work is seen. A clear niyyah at the start of the day. A pause before the hard call. Knowing every act has a standing with Allah.

Trustees of the most vulnerable hour.

The patient's dignity as an amanah. Bedside manner as sadaqah (charity, freely given). Sabr (patience) through the burnout. Competence, because lives sit inside it.

04 Education and educators

What students, employers and the field are owed.

Preparation as mastery. Fair assessment as amanah. Knowledge passed on as sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity). Honesty of effort to the institution.

Every session opens with CIEA's Oath: eight commitments covering trust, stewardship, riba-free trade, the dignity of people, and zakat.

A business commitment

The Oath of a Muslim in Business

I render this oath in the name of Allah, Most Merciful, as I undertake and understand:

  1. 01 Tier: Mushahadah That true wealth and property belongs to Allah alone and is entrusted to me by Allah; thus I will ensure my career choice, business methods and income are all consistent with the laws and teachings of Islam as guided by the scholars.
  2. 02 That I will actively abstain from riba and usury in all forms.
  3. 03 That as a vicegerent of Allah on this earth, I will actively produce and selectively and conservatively consume, so as to achieve real progress and development whilst keeping the welfare of mankind and future generations at heart; and that I will not be driven by self-enrichment.
  4. 04 Tiers: Amanah + Itqan That I will provide the goods and services for which I am receiving a consideration in an ethical and trustworthy way, to the best of my ability, and fulfil all contractual obligations as agreed.
  5. 05 Tiers: Amanah + Ihsan That I will safeguard the dignity of, and respect the true value of, my employees, customers and suppliers, and adequately and timeously discharge all due obligations.
  6. 06 Tier: Amanah That I will not cheat, deceive, commit theft, withhold goods or services, hoard, or engage in any manipulative or monopolistic practices in any capacity.
  7. 07 That I will accurately determine annually the due obligatory zakah on my business and income, and distribute it in accordance with the tenets of the Qur'an and Prophetic guidance.
  8. 08 That ultimately all success or failure of all earthly endeavours are determined by Allah Almighty alone, for wealth and property are His alone to give and to take.

O Allah! Grant me the strength, patience, dedication and perseverance to adhere to this undertaking at all times. Amin.
